The Legend:
The legend of Azzurrina is an old Italian tale that tells of a little girl, the daughter of the Count of Montebello. She was born with albinism, and in those times, such a condition was feared and misunderstood—often seen as a mark of the devil. To protect her, her mother dyed the child’s white hair with herbal pigments, hoping to hide the truth. But instead of turning dark, her hair took on a pale blue hue. From that day on, everyone in the castle began calling her Azzurrina—the little blue one.
On the day of the summer solstice, a fierce storm broke out, and Azzurrina was kept inside the castle for her safety. As thunder rumbled through the halls, she played alone, chasing a rag ball through the dim corridors. The ball rolled toward the staircase that led down to the icehouse, and Azzurrina followed. The guards assigned to watch over her heard a sudden scream and rushed to the spot—but the girl had vanished. No trace of her was ever found.
Since then, it’s said that on the night of the summer solstice, her voice still echoes through the stone halls of the castle, a whisper from the other side.
The Artist´s work:
This doll does not portray Azzurrina as a victim, but as an echo suspended in time, transformed by sorrow and mystery into a dreamlike, surreal being.
They say she vanished into nothing — but maybe she crossed an invisible portal, becoming trapped in another dimension.
There, outside of time, she crystallized like a forgotten doll, a silent witness to a repeating eternity.
The castle growing from her head is both prison and memory.
Azzurrina is not alive, nor dead.
She is presence and absence all at once, made of rain, shadow, and longing to be seen.
Her legend returns every five years, but she remains, always waiting to cross the boundary again.
